Scott Rigell has been solid on social issues, but his fiscal record is a mixed bag.  He voted for the omnibus and debt ceiling fiasco in 2011.  However, it’s a statement he made on August 27, 2012 that reveals him as a big government statist. He claims that balancing the budget is “indefensible mathematically” without raising taxes.  That is an anathema to limited government ideals.  A true limited government could easily be sustained with current tax rates. Moreover, any new revenue would go towards growing government.  Finally, the rich already shoulder a disproportionate burden in taxes.  Raising their taxes will only dampen the economy and preclude us from actually recovering that additional revenue in the long run.  Rigell’s views are quite illuminating indeed.
