Chris Smith is one of the biggest underperformers in his state’s delegation and one of the worst underperformers in the entire Republican conference. This 30-year veteran has seen better days. He has consistently been trending downward on fiscal issues and is one of the most pro-big-labor Republicans. He voted against every effort to reign in big spending and big labor. He even voted against expanding offshore drilling. Chris Smith was one of 3 Republicans to vote for the socialist “Fair Pay Act” in 2009. He was also one of the few Republicans to vote for Cap and Trade and was one of 9 Republicans to oppose a commensese bill that would expediate the process for issuing permits for oil drilling.
It should be noted that he is a strong social conservative and one of the most ardent defenders of life in Congress. His work on pro-life legislation is obviously not reflected in his legislative scores. Nonetheless, his district has trended more Republican over the years, making his dismal fiscal record unacceptable, even when balanced against his work on social issues.
